James Group, founded initially as O-J Transport Company by John A. James and Calvin Outlaw, is created, overcoming numerous Federal legislative battles, including a Supreme Court decision where Mr. James obtained a 48-state operating authority while easing the burden for minorities to enter the trucking business.

Mr. James applied for the right to be a "common carrier" so that he could haul automotive parts and malt beverages, a move that was protested by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) for over 3 years until it was eventually carried into the Supreme Court.

1976
The Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mr. James, granting him the authority to transport between states. This victory also allowed women and minorities to enter transportation—an industry that was exclusively for white males at the time.

1980
Followed by Mr. James' Supreme Court win, the Motor Carrier Act of 1933 was amended and signed by President Jimmy Carter, successfully deregulating the trucking industry.
